The National Airport of Karpathos is located on the southern edge of the island Karpathos, at a distance of 15 kilometers from Pigadia, the capital town, and can be reached only by taxi service or if you rent a car. Τhe airport operates from the 1970. The airport flyes to and from 13 destinations. The Karpathos Airport is linked by charter flights to much of Europe: Vienna, Graz, Salzburg, Munich, Frankfurt, Duesseldorf, Amsterdam, Ljubljana, Copenhagen, Oslo, Helsinki and Milano. There are daily flights to connect Athens and Karpathos and only a few charter flights from abroad. No direct flights from other Greek airports are held, all flights to Karpathos depart from Athens. The flight time from Athens is about an hour. This lovely little island between Rhodes and Crete is still a very genuine place without any major tourism and friendly people. It is a great place for windsurfers since it gets quite windy here which often keeps the mosquitoes away, and keeps even the hot summer days enjoyable. Unlike Corfu, you won’t encounter any maddening crowds of tourists, or all-night partiers on this tiny island, which still has a very traditional Greek culture. By October, all charter flights have ended, marking the unofficial end of the season. Shops close their doors and restaurants roll down their awnings. Many hotels close until Easter. Regular ferry service in season connects Karpathos to Pireaus (Athens) via Naxos, Paros, Thira, Heraklion, Agios Nikolaos, Sitia, Kassos, Diafani, Halki, Rhodes, Kos, Kalymnos, Samos, Mitilene, Chios, Lesbos, Alexandroupolis. Car rental office is located in Karpathos airport with a lot of different cars to rent. Taxis operate day and night, while bus service only runs days and not Sundays. The island’s port towns, Diafani and Pigadia, are connected by ferry. You can also rent a bike or motor scooter.
